A £150million demolition programme is shortly to commence on the former Redcar Steelworks site to clear the land ready for new developments. Before these works begin, Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has announced that a number of organised and escorted tours will be laid on for members of the community who may wish to explore the historic site.

The guided bus tours will allow people to see the iconic structures such as the Blast Furnace and Coke Ovens, which have been part of the Redcar landscape for generations, up close safely and in line with current social distancing regulations.

The opportunity will allow people a chance to learn more about the history of the site and make some final memories to treasure long after the buildings have gone.

The tours will be available throughout October and are bookable through the Eventbrite website here. In light of Covid-19 government guidelines, the precise nature of these tours will be confirmed closer to the time of departure. However we are currently expecting the tours to last approximately 90 minutes, face coverings must be worn at all times and will depart from the gatehouse at Redcar. Parking will be available. More information is available on the Eventbrite page.
