Redcar Blast Furnace

KEY INFORMATION:

An explosive demolition brought down the Casting Houses, the Dust Catcher, Charge Conveyors, and the Blast Furnace at the Redcar Blast Furnace at 9am on Wednesday 23 November, 2022.

⚙ The demolition took between five and ten seconds. ⚙

⚙ Thompsons of Prudhoe spent months preparing and cleaning the site. The four enormous gas stoves which heated the furnace were demolished separately. ⚙

⚙ A 250-metre exclusion zone was in place for the demolition. ⚙

⚙ The Gare Road was closed from 8am for the demolition to take place. ⚙

⚙ The demolition marked an important change in the Teesside skyline ⚙

⚙ Every effort was made to reduce the impact of dust – with a thorough programme of cleaning undertaken by contractors in the run up to the demolition. There were also mitigation measures with water foggers and hoses. However, naturally from a blowdown of this size and type, there was dust created by the demolition which blew over The Gare in the aftermath and dissipated after around five minutes. ⚙
