Hundreds of tonnes of asphalt are being laid as a vital Teesworks link road takes shape.
Teams from Rainton Construction Ltd – part of MGL Group – have been working since last week to lay the top of the new 1.6km South Bank Link Road.
The mile-long route will provide access to a 500-acre site at Teesworks – including the huge SeAH Wind monopile manufacturing plant.
It will also include footpaths and a cycleway as well as a single carriageway road. There will also be a new roundabout within the South Bank site close to the entrance to connect to the existing roundabout junction at Smith’s Dock Road/Dockside Road.
North East firm Rainton Construction Ltd has been spearheading the £7million scheme since December.
This phase is now seeing hundreds of metres of asphalt being applied to the road in a process lasting about a fortnight.
Martin Corney, Teesworks CEO, said: “It’s great to see the progress teams are making on this road. We’re getting on with the job of linking up the site and making it fit for the vital industries moving in.
“At the same time, we’re keeping and creating jobs in the region through the project. I’m pleased the road is running on time and we’ll continue to work with the contractor to make sure it does.”
Dave Elliott, Joint Chief Executive of MGL Group said: “We are proud to deliver infrastructure improvements that will transform the Teesworks site. By ensuring first-class connectivity, we are supporting the ambitions of the Freeport – making it a thriving hub for businesses and employment.”
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “Big projects require top quality infrastructure. Our Teesworks team and local contractors are getting on and ensuring this link road is being put down at pace.
“This road is vital to unlocking better access to 500-acres of land at Teesworks – and creating another way into the UK’s first and biggest Freeport.
“Our Joint Venture partners have been key in ensuring work across the site is continuing apace with our demolition programme almost complete nearly three years ahead of schedule and 230 acres of land already remediated.”
In future phases, the link road will be extended through the South Bank site.
