The latest multi-million-pound development on Teesworks providing space for local businesses to develop and grow has been announced.

A total of 43 modern business units will be built at South Bank, offering almost 100,000sq ft of industrial, commercial and office space.

The development will comprise one commercial unit of 10,000sq ft, two units of 7,000sq ft and five units of 3,500sq ft.

There will also be a further 35 hybrid units of 1,600sq ft which will include ground floor warehouse and first floor office space.

The scheme is intended to provide a location for Teesside firms to benefit from the major developments taking place at Teesworks.

New parking for South Bank railway station will feature in the development.

It will also incorporate a memorial garden providing a lasting tribute to workers who have tragically died on the former steelworks site.

Teesworks released details last month about the garden, which will offer a place of quiet reflection for loved ones while honouring those that have died in the 170 years of iron and steelmaking on Teesside.

Teesworks Chairman Chris Musgrave OBE said: “We are now making huge strides in transforming Teesworks into a location where businesses can thrive.

“We are developing this as a place where local firms can set up and grow – and companies from outside the area can also expand into Teesside.”

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “This is another example of the fantastic progress we are making at Teesworks to develop the site as a great locations for a whole range of businesses.

“These units will provide a modern location where great new companies can set up and where established firms can expand and grow – delivering the well-paid jobs and investment our area deserves.”

A planning application will be submitted to Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council in coming weeks.

Construction is expected to start in 2024, subject to planning approval.

The development follows the announcement last week by British Steel that steelmaking will return to Teesworks under proposals to build an electric arc furnace at Lackenby, near Redcar.

Separately, construction of the giant £450million SeAH Wind monopile manufacturing facility is continuing at South Bank while the work on the deepwater South Bank Quay is also nearing completion.

Preparatory work also continues on the site of the former Redcar Blast Furnace ahead of the construction of the £1.5billion Net Zero Teesside Power project.
