A new Teesworks park and ride scheme to serve thousands of workers will go to committee next week – with planning officials recommending its approval.
The 35-acre site, located near the former SSI Steel House, Redcar, will have parking for more than 1,500 vehicles. Plans are also in place for the hub to host shuttlebuses from the car park to Teesworks projects in a bid to keep congestion to a minimum both on-site and on the wider road network, while ensuring the workers are safe.
The car park will be used by workers as development ramps up on major projects including Net Zero Teesside Power which will create up to 5,500 jobs during its construction and the upcoming SeAH Wind offshore wind monopile facility.
The site is bound by the former car park at the Steel House offices, north of the A1085 trunk road, and south of the Tees Valley Railway Line. Electric Vehicle charging points, cycle spaces, bus shelters and spaces for motorcycles are part of the plans.
Access would be via a new signal-controlled junction off the A1085 – with a new slip road also provided as part of proposals. Planning Officials at Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council have recommended the plans for approval subject to conditions.
If approved, construction will be able to begin in the coming weeks.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “Game-changing projects taking place at Teesworks will create thousands of good-quality, well-paid jobs in the cleaner, safer and healthier industries of the future.
“But we’re also seeing hundreds of construction jobs being created here and now – and more will follow.
“This new park-and-ride will provide vital infrastructure to ensure people can quickly, easily and safely get to their jobs as we redevelop the area over the coming years. It will also become a valuable asset after these schemes are complete.”
A vote is due to take place at the Council Regulatory Committee on Thursday, 2 February.
