Plans for a pioneering new hydrogen project at Teesworks have taken another major step forward.
EDF Renewables UK and Hynamics, a 100% subsidiary of EDF Group specialising in hydrogen, have now officially submitted plans for the first phase of its Tees Green Hydrogen project.
Tees Green Hydrogen will produce green hydrogen using electrolysis, powered by electricity from EDF Renewables UK’s portfolio, including from the proposed Tees Solar farm project, near Redcar.
The 12-acre site will be located at Teesworks, on the former Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) Plant at Lackenby, with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council now set to consider the proposals.
EDF Renewables announced last week that £28million had been secured from the government’s Net Zero Hydrogen Fund (NZHF) for Tees Green Hydrogen.
The project will provide a boost to local industry and transport by supplying green hydrogen to support decarbonisation efforts and achieve a significant reduction in industrial pollution, securing its long-term sustainability.
EDF Renewables UK will now progress towards Phase 1 of the project. In its initial phase, the electrolyser will have a 7.5MW capacity.
Chris Musgrave, Chairman of Teesworks, said: “The BOS plant was brought down last October and now, just over one year on, EDF are progressing at pace to get this groundbreaking project on-site. This shows the speed at which the site is moving, and the momentum we’re building – not just with EDF but as we continue remediation for other key projects such as bp’s Net Zero Teesside and Circular Fuels’ renewable fuel facility.”
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “It’s fantastic to see this project moving forward and this another example of how our area is fast becoming the home of the green industries of the future which will provide well-paid, high-quality jobs.
“We are attracting major global investors such a EDF to Teesworks who are delivering UK-first projects that will not only bring new jobs to the area but also play a vital role in supporting existing industries.”
It is hoped that work could begin on site in 2025, with the facility operational by 2026. Future phases will seek to deliver up to 300MW in Teesside before 2030.
A separate planning application has already been submitted for the Tees Solar Farm project.
EDF already plays a considerable role in the North East with offshore wind farms at Teesside and Blyth, Hartlepool Power Station and offices in Doxford and Rainton Bridge. Tees Green Hydrogen will build on this, helping the region become even more of a leader in sustainability.
